Palmer Station, Antarctica

These pictures were taken near Palmer Station, Antartica. Palmer Station is on Anvers Island, just off the Antarctic Peninsula. The most scenic approach to Palmer is via the Gerlach Strait and Neumayer Channel. These straits are narrow, steep and spectacular. Palmer Station is the main base for U. S. research on the Peninsula side of Antarctica; it is located on a rocky spit of land situated on Arthur Harbor. A glacier rises up behind the station and covers most of the island. There is no airstrip access at Palmer Station. All supplies and personnel arrive via the Antarctic supply vessels, the ARSV Laurence M. Gould and the RVIB Nathaniel B. Palmer.
